After meeting the clients and learning their needs, a new design was developed to showcase their 13-unit motel and cabins located in Woodstock, NH. It was determined that a customized Wordpress site would allow the customer to log-in, manage the content, and keep a blog for their current and future customers. They wanted to have soft colors and a very appealing and personal interface that would capture the imagination of their customer and utlimately get them to book.

The website, fully optimized for their preferred keywords, and structured to retain the rankings they had achieved in a previous iteration, was launched in early January. Today, we learned that the Maple Lodge Cabins website has earned placement honors with Destination Nexus, the destination website and reservation software employed by the client. Here is what the client had to say, in an email dated March, 9th, 2010:

Hi,

Go to www.destinationnexus.com

click on nh

Reservation Nexus is my software company they now have destination
nexus which is a directory of specialty lodging all over the nation.
They have ranked my website better than all of the other listings for NH. So this gives me the privilege of being listed first for NH.
Before anyone even clicks on a city. (for as long as my site stays more updated than the other listings) Cool huh? Thanks to you!!!

We also got word that for the first time ever, their weekends this March (historically a slow period) are completely sold out. We could not be more happy for Bonnie and Bill at the Maple Lodge Cabins. Congratulations!

The days of paying over-priced web developers to deliver simple interactive websites is over. With the recent growth of open source technologies, such as Drupal and Wordpress (this site is a WordPress website), we can develop sites in a fraction of the time and cost of a traditional website.

From the plethora of themes, functions, plug-ins, widgets, and other fun website tools offered through these completely free software platforms, we can customize websites as if developed from scratch. The difference is the time it takes and the amount of code that can be sampled. Here’s an analogy. Imagine if you wanted to build a brand new car yourself. Chances are you’d never actually do that, but lets say you had the ambition. Would you literally machine all of the parts of the car, or would you go to a parts store and buy them? You’d go to the store. Now, you bring all of those parts home with you and you assemble them in your own garage. Of course, you need to know how they go together and work together. But, at least you don’t have to know how to run a lathe and micrometer.

Once you have the chassis put together and the engine block assembled, you start to choose the finishing touches. Color, layout, bells and whistles, etc. The car runs like a top. And, you pieced it together in a fraction of the time.

Open source software solutions like Drupal, stem from a global community of website developers that are motivated to provide the best code possible (while getting some recognition for their work) and sharing their skills with each other. The programmers are extremely talented people learning from each other as they submit projects to the community. The benefactors of all of their works, are those that choose to use the programs they’ve written for the community, like us.

TotalScope Marketing has produced a dozen or so websites, as of this date, using both Drupal and WordPress. Each have their advantages and disadvantages, but both are high quality platforms. Drupal is great for building highly interactive websites, that incorporate web 2.0 principles in a modular fashion. Wordpress is one of the best softwares for setting up blogging sites and simple promotional sites.

Have a look at some of the webistes that we’ve put together and are currently working on. Each has been built using these open source platforms and each was done quickly with a relatively low cost. If you are looking to have a high quality, low cost, and quickly built site, consider employing one of these technologies, or contact us, and we’ll help YOU do it.

On July 12th, 2008, our client, the Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society (UPHS) held the first “Ways of the Woods” event at the Lincoln Village Shops in Lincoln, NH. The event, which focused on the impact of the northern forest on the communities and history of the area, saw over 500 visitors through its exhibit.

TotalScope was employed by the UPHS to market this event on a low budget, and was successful in doing so, using cost-effective advertising techniques. The goals were to generate event visitors, new UPHS members, and revenue for the UPHS. TotalScope wrote and distributed multiple press releases, took advantage of free event listings on a number of high-traffic New Hampshire websites, created flyers, posters, and html emails, and leveraged the event visitors for mailing list registrations.

The following is a sample of the graphic work that was completed:
Ways of the Woods Flyer, by TotalScope
Ways of the Woods HTML Email, by TotalScope

TotalScope has ammassed a list of exceptional websites that offer free event listings. When utilized correctly, these free listings can give a boost to a campaign in 2 ways.

The website will advertise your event and generate direct referral traffic to your website.

Often, the link back to your website improves your popularity with the search engines.

This project was the perfect example of how low-cost measures can be employed to generate qualified visitors, whether to an event, or to a website. Often, “time” is the more challenged resource. In this case, 500 visitors were brought to an event in Lincoln, NH in under 1 month’s time.

You fought very hard in your organization to build in a reasonable budget for your e-marketing initiatives. Now, as a result of the “budget re-forecasting meeting”, you’ve been told that sales projections for the second quarter are off by 30% and now you must cut the “fat” from your expense budget by that amount to meet your department goals. You walk away from the meeting with your head down, wondering how you are going to continue the progress you’ve made with your website marketing. There goes the $2/click you were paying on AdWords and the $5/lead you were paying your affiliates.

Here’s the good news: You’re not alone. Though there is no real “safety in numbers” in the e-marketing world, you can take advantage of this time to re-focus your effots, save some money, and leverage the down economy to gain a competetive advantage. Since every other organization competing for high-visibility, high-traffic media is cutting their budgets as well, you have an opportunity to renegotiate with your vendors, and potentially lock in better rates for your campaigns. Take a look at CPC rates for your keywords and see if they are still trending up. Ask your vendors for lower rates in lieu of canceling your I/O’s. And, work with your affiliates on scaling the payouts more toward benchmarked achievement. In other words, you don’t have to simply cut. You can re-negotiate.

This is also the time to focus on your user interface. If you have to cut the amount you spend on generating site traffic, focus on improving the traffic quality and resultant conversions. Take another look at the data and ask yourself what can be done to improve your conversion rates. Are there content areas that need further development? What site features could be implemented at little cost to improve the stickyness of the site? What are the fundamental changes that can be made to the conversion funnel to improve your cost per conversion. Even if you increase your conversion rates by a fraction of a point, you will have likely done it at a fraction of the cost.

Search for Free and/or inexpensive distribution channels. Are you working the social media sites like MySpace and YouTube? Are you feeding out your content with RSS or other syndication platforms? Are you blogging and chatting about your products/services? How are your email campaigns going? Have you mined your database for a segment that you’ve yet to reach? Have you called your grandma and asked her to mention your website at bingo? Seriously, you’ve got a little more time now to focus on these outlets since you can’t go for the mainstream.

Lastly, consider your staff and your peers. There may be some fear out there that the real cuts are coming in terms of layoffs (thanks to our never ending news cycle on jobs reports). Challenge them to find more creative ways to meet goals on a reduced budget. You’d be amazed at what outside-of-the-box ideas are generated when the staff feels the pressure of budget cuts. Encourage your associates to brainstorm and communicate their ideas. There are no bad ideas in times like these. Speaking of labor costs, don’t hold off on replacing your vacant marketing position. Now is the time to source talent that will help bring your program to the next level, without overspending.

So, keep your heads up. This is not all gloom and doom like the presidential candidates and the actuarials make you think.

Renegotiate with your vendors.

Refocus on the user interface.

Take advantave of free distribution channels.

Lean on your team and your peers.

There are ways to continue what you’ve started and to attain your goals. You just have to get creative.

Its not news to hear that its HOT in Mexico. But, what is clearly becoming a warming trend in the timeshare and vacation ownership industry, is the rise of destinations like Cancun, Los Cabos, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Accapulco, and Cozumel, just to name a few. With the growth of resort development, the infusion of major resort brands in these destinations, and a seemingly endless demand for vacation packages, it is clear to us that Mexico is where its at.

Known for its high-end resorts, long white sand beaches, and party atmosphere, Cancun is among the favorite of all Mexico destinations. We have had the luxury of selling resorts in Cancun for years, namely the Royal Resorts, Laguna Suites, Fiesta Americana, and now the El Cid Resorts Riviera Maya. Through our marketing partnerships with these resorts, we have been able to generate hundreds of hooked and unhooked rental vacation reservations.

<img src='http://www.totalscopemarketing.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/favc_loscabos.jpg' border="1" alt='Fiesta American Grand Los Cabos' FAVC – Los Cabos

So where is Mexico growing? We are seeing a strong demand now for places like Los Cabos and Mazatlan. One of the most gorgeous resorts in Los Cabos is the Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos. This resort does not only offer every possible amenity imaginable, it has unbeatable mini-vacation packages to boot. We are excited as a marketing company to have the opportunity to sell such a wonderful product. And, the El Cid Marina Beach Hotel in Mazatlan, MX is a notch above the rest. Thanks to our friends at El Cid Resorts, we are able to bring more great vacation offers to our travelers.

If you had asked me 5 years ago, where I though we would be spending the majority of our time marketing…I would not have said Mexico. Today, we are marketing our Mexican vacation resorts equally with domestic ones. Our partners in Mexico have helped us to build some of the strongest rental, mini-vac, lead, and tour generation campaigns we have worked on to date. Of course, we have the luxury of selling these packages on ResortScope.com and through our other web properties like CMSGetaways.com.

We are currently seeking more partners in Mexico that can round-out our product line. As we know from experience, travelers shop for the best values, and they clearly want choices. Now that we have an established supply and demand for our resorts in Mexico, we are poised to bring our Mexico inventory to scale.

If you have some interest in working with us on our Mexico Vacation Resort Marketing, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Another ARDA Convention has come and gone, and as usual, it was a huge success. The TotalScope staff had the pleasure of meeting, brainstorming, and socializing with the vacation ownership industry VIP’s. Highlights include the keynote speach by world renowned business writer Jason Jennings, the Sales and Marketing Forum, the many intellectually stimulating sessions, and of course, the social networking. Who said REO Speedwagon was too old…?

Most importantly, TotalScope solidified its place in the internet tour generation business by meeting face to face with its very important clients. Thank you Paul Carney with InnSeason Resorts, Rene DeGre and Mauricio Carreon with Fiesta American Vacation Club, Perry Williams and Jeff Buckwalter with New England Marketing Promotions, Leah Mussachio with Wyndham Vacation Ownership, and all of our friends around town. We enjoyed our time and look forward to continued success in the coming year.

Right at home
So much of the discussions in the breakout sessions and in conversations in the busy hallways was on the topic of tour generation. This is no surprise as it has always been the hot topic of every convention. The difference this year was the focus on the internet as a vehicle to facilitate this process. We heard in one of the sessions that “there is yet to be true internet tour generation without telemarketing.” When we heard this, we looked at each other in disbelief because we have been doing this, granted on a very small scale, for several years. ResortScope.com sold its first purely internet generated tour 2 years ago and has continued to improve on the process. Now, TotalScope is taking the process vertical by creating and marketing micro-sites to hone in on this skill.

ARDA this year has helped TotalScope to re-define its “cause.”
TotalScope is committed to bringing the vacation ownership industry into the next generation of marketing by creating intuitive and compelling web-based consumer centric marketing models. Simply put, we are driven to change the way that timeshare is brought to the public and the way the public is brought to timeshare. We will strive to change the timeshare marketing paradigm by putting the consumers in control. Transparency and integrity are the keys to success and TotalScope will continue to champion these ideas throughout the industry.

Again, a big THANK YOU goes out to everyone for a great few days in the sun. Orlando continues to impress.

We were approached by a client who was looking to have vacation packages directly marketed to pre-qualified leads. The client already had a robust lead generation system in place with a functioning verification service. However, the client lacked the resources to put together a small website for the purposes of displaying and booking these vacation packages.

Our strategy was to launch targeted email campaigns to these leads with links to offer landing pages on a small website. However, one of the requirements was that the website had to know about the lead, and have access to the lead data. Further, all bookings had to be processed on the client’s systems, not on the website.

Traditionally, the process of sharing data from one system to another involved exporting data in the source system in comma-separated format (CSV) and uploading that file to a process on the target system for import. Some systems had automated procedures for this, and others were very manual. TotalScope Marketing decided to take a different approach: web services.

Web services is a way to expose business processes to other disparate systems using the Internet as the communication layer for the purpose of sharing data. What this means is that two separate and distinct systems can share data securely over the internet, regardless of what operating system, database, and web server is being used on either end. Further, web services are dynamic, giving you up-to-date access to data on other systems on demand.

To this end, we implemented a web service to accept batches of lead records to import into the website’s database and the client implemented a web service to handle booking requests.

In practice, the process works like this: targeted emails are sent to pre-qualified leads, containing links to offer landing pages on the website. Unique lead identifiers are embedded within the link, so that when the link is clicked and the landing page is displayed, the website retrieves the lead’s information from its database. When the lead completes a booking request form, the website sends the booking request data securely over the Internet to the client’s web service, which then processes the booking request within its existing system.

Phase 2 of this project will extend the web services model to eliminate the import of leads. Lead retrieval can occur on demand via web services on the client system. In practice, when a link to a landing page is clicked on in the email, the landing page will retrieve the lead’s information dynamically through a web service.

This method allows us to build any number of small websites for the client that are essentially shells. The real business data and processes already exist on the client’s system, and there is no need to reproduce that data in multiple locations, which saves time and money for the client.

There is an emerging trend in affiliate marketing that I will dub “Virtual Affiliate Marketing”. The reason I call it virtual is that there is no referring domain, no referring website, no real referring supplier. In traditional affiliate marketing, an affiliate website will refer traffic to another website using specified tracking URL’s that will be triggered when a click or transaction is made on the host site. The most common is a website with similar content refering traffic to an e-commerce site that sells a product or service. The sale on the host site, when referred by the affiliate, is commissionable.

What we are seeing as an upward trend, are affiliates that are using those same tracking URL’s from their host site, though not necessarily referring the the traffic to those URL’s from their own websites. They are taking those tracking URL’s and utilizing them in their advertising. Rather than bring the visitor to their own site first, they are bringing visitors directly to the host sites using the tracking URL’s. Here is an example of what I am referring to:

Website xyztennisshoes.com is an e-commerce website selling tennis shoes and other tennis paraphanalia. They have an affiliate program, where other related websites refer traffic to them and get credit for any sales. They also have a “virtual affiliate” that doesn’t even have a website. The virtual affiliate uses the tracking code embedded in the URL of the xyztennisshoes.com website.

The URL might look something like this: http://www.xyztennisshoes.com?affiliate_id=12345

A virtual affiliate will take this URL and use it in a Google AdWords campaign. The click is taken directly to xyztennisshoes.com and the affiliate would get credit for any sale made. Obviously the host site does not care that the affiliate is doing this sort of marketing because they are still reaching their objective…more traffic, more sales.

I am keeping an eye on this trend to discern if affiliates will be able to earn a return on their advertising investment. My guess is that affiliates with large databases of email addresses will be able to use direct marketing as a means to keep their costs down enough to make Virtual Affiliate Marketing a viable alternative to the traditional

Highlights of the show include the vast array of educational sessions, the exhibit hall, and general sessions with profound speakers who educate and entertain. However, the reason we all go...is to network. The vacation ownership industry's most important people will all be within a 1/2 mile radius at the same time. The atmosphere is professional, yet casual and the people are all fantastic.
Of course we will be there. Though this year will be different than years past. Michael Petrasko and Mark LaClair will be attending, as usual, to network with the industry’s VIP’s and to share in the celebration of another successful year. The 2 principals of TotalScope Marketing and timeshare website, ResortScope.com, will be attending all of the meetings and convention gala that ARDA has grown to be.

The goal this year, however, has changed from the casting of a wide net, to the laser spearing of the best fish in the timeshare pond. The founders are participating in this year’s convention to seek partners for long term vertical marketing relationships. TotalScope has pioneered a mousetrap that works, to bring leads to marketers and tours to development projects around the globe. The Internet is where its at, and TotalScope is there, leading the way.

A successful show for the TotalScope staff will be to make connections with other vendors who can provide traffic to its resort industry clients websites. TotalScope is looking for partners that can produce qualified leads to the various microsites that are generating tours, such as CMSGetaways.com. TotalScope is also looking for marketing and developer partners in new destinations and markets not already covered.

As with any marketing campaign, goals determine strategies, objectives drive tactics. I often break internet marketing campaigns down into time-qualifying, ROI deliverables. What objectives am I trying to achieve in the short term and the long term. The answers to those questions will inevitably determine my course of action. For instance, on a new launch project, a short term goal (perhaps 6 months to 1 year) may be to gain exposure immediately, with high quality traffic that drives sales. Many start-up companies need those sales in the firts few days or weeks in order to sustain their business. This may be best accomplished by initializing a CPC campaign or email campaign to existing relationships. The CPC campaign can immediately deliver results, but may be more expensive than an email campaign. Nevertheless, each can be utilized to achieve those short term goals.

Long term goals (1 year +) typically include brand development, brand awareness, and customer retention. Obviously, tactics to deploy for these goals are much different than those of the short term. We may employ an affiliate marketing strategy, SEO, and email communications, all of which need time to gain traction. Some of these campaigns can be a more cost-effective means of generating traffic, leads, and sales because they have been developed over time, not overnight.

When consulting with any new client, I am always interested in what the marketing goals are. For each, their definition of short term and long term differ greatly. Some know exactly what they are trying to establish, and others are looking for guidance. Yet, for all, understanding the value of short term and long term strategies helps to determine the best course of action.
